World Humanitarian Day, observed annually 19 August, anniversary of 2003 bombing of UN headquarters in Baghdad that killed 22 people, including UN envoy Sergio Vieira de Mello. This year’s observance comes at a time when number of aid workers killed, kidnapped & seriously wounded has reached highest number ever recorded. NASDAQ’s Opening Bell also recognized the day.
