Blog Report: ASSAD INTENDS TO PERPETUATE HIS RULE, IS UN/ARAB LEAGUE ENVOY’S ASSESSMENT,  By Ambassador Mo

ImageHis public comments were less direct & more circumspect about what next on Syria; however, the private assessment of new UN/Arab League Envoy Lakhdar Brahimi is that Assad has no intention of leaving or implementing any democratic reforms. He is employing threat of armed opposition both to convey a fight against terrorists & maintain an absolute grip on power of his family.

WATCH Film Report: SYRIA: UN GENERAL ASSEMBLY SHAMING SECURITY COUNCIL INTO ACTION?
As Kofi Annan resigns, the UN Security Council is once again exposed as not united and unable/unwilling to address its responsibility regarding the “threat to international peace and security” that Syria has become. Blog Report: KOFI ANNAN’S RESIGNATION NEW OPPORTUNITY FOR SYRIA PEACE? By Ambassador Mo
Assad, Kremlin & Beijing had counted on Kofi Annan’s diplomacy to effectively act as buffer against more sanctions or greater engagement. At best, Kofi Annan’s diplomacy did not receive the support it needed. At worst, Annan’s methodology of overt neutrality and behind the scenes deal-making has become increasingly obsolete. –MORE–

Blog Report: SYRIA — ARAB LEAGUE NEEDED TO REGAIN ITS ROLE, By Ambassador Mo
It had become more of a stand-off between the big powers than about Syria’s neighbors or even that country’s citizens. While Kofi Annan had been named both UN & Arab League Special Envoy on Syria, it is evident from outset that he perceived his role defined & success determined by the big powers. Annan revealed his mindset by referring to himself as mediator rather than a representative. –More–

ImageBlog Report: DISINGENUOUS (IN)ACTION GROUP ON SYRIA PEACE? By Ambassador Mo
The new Syria peace initiative is more of the same, in fact it is not even new. Quickly stitched together during “Action Group on Syria” conference in Geneva it does not pave a new road to peace as advertised. One final bad omen – just ask the Bosnians/Herzegovinians: You know you are at a dead end when your “peace conferences” move to Geneva.

ImageBlog Report: “ACTION GROUP FOR SYRIA,” By Ambassador Mo
Kofi Annan has given it a name & sent invitations for high-level & perhaps last ditch conference to pull political solution out of hat for conference. Initially, Conference was labeled “Contact Group on Syria,” reflecting similar institutionalization of process as in Bosnia (BiH). Results of Contact Group’s efforts in BiH were mixed. It took over 2 years from establishment to end fighting. Thus, perhaps Kofi Annan opted for “Action Group for Syria.”

Blog Report: SYRIA’S ASSAD REGIME BLOCKS UN OBSERVERS, By Amassador Mo
Blocking UN Observers from performing their mandated task may appear to pale in comparison to continued killing & massacres. However, it establishes notion that mandate cannot be achieved without further coercive action with respect to Syria’s Assad regime.   Evidence of continued violations of the cease-fire terms and Kofi Annan’s plan goes from bad to worse. –More–

Blog Report: HILLARY CLINTON TO DICTATE TO KOFI ANNAN? By Ambassador Mo
Kofi Annan is scheduled to meet US Sec of State Hillary Clinton this Friday. Washington has been missing actor all along preferring to camouflage its own ambivalence behind deadlocked UNSC. While Washington wants to see Bashar Al-Assad go, it is not certain how much more if at all it prefers opposition. Little has succeeded in gaining influence with Assad Regime or securing foothold for Annan Plan. –More–
