The headlines are not particularly encouraging. The Taliban appear to have adopted a new tactic that is intended to discourage  transformation of the country. Despite threats from Taliban, insecurity & a challenging geography, a UN/Afghanistan government program to eradicate measles & polio has vaccinated over 8 million children in the country within just the last month – there is a need for more funding/support to complete the effort over next 2 months. Vaccination is an urgent effort to stop spread of polio – 13 cases already reported this year in Afghanistan & 25 across border in Pakistan. –More–

No real peace is possible in Afghanistan unless abuses against & rights of women/girls are addressed. However, negotiations cannot be about women/girls only, they must include women at the peace process. On April 25th, 2012, Film Annex & Citadel Software Company built the first internet classroom at Baghnazargah School in Herat, Afghanistan. The students we excited to have access to the Internet through brand new computers & get connected to the world. The classroom’s official opening was celebrated by government officials and the school’s administration.

Attacks upon schools by Taliban linked insurgents have spiked over the last few weeks. Insurgents targeted education officials traveling in Paktika province killing 5 & wounding 7. In Khogyani district of Nangahar province on 8 May, anti-government elements set fire to a girls’ secondary school in Wazir village, destroying two school buildings & equipment.
